Another exciting Bundesliga weekend awaits. Der Klassiker is on Saturday, a battle between the two newly-promoted outfits on Friday, & much, much more! Season Prediction Accuracy: 55/98 (56.1%) St. Pauli v Holstein KielThe Millerntor-Stadion in Hamburg sets the stage for a high-stakes clash between two newly promoted sides. While this fixture might not promise fireworks in terms of entertainment, its significance as a six-pointer in the battle for top-flight survival cannot be overstated. Holstein Kiel, sitting 17th with five points, and St. Pauli, in 16th with eight, are both desperate to escape the relegation zone this weekend. The reasons for their struggles, however, differ markedly. In Hamburg, St. Pauli’s glaring issue is their lack of attacking firepower. With just seven goals this season, they have the second-lowest tally among all 96 clubs in Europe’s top five leagues. Only US Lecce in Serie A have scored fewer goals this term (5). While Kiel have managed only 12 goals themselves, their defensive frailties are far more concerning than any attacking deficiencies. The team has already conceded 28 goals this season, with a worrying trend of early deficits. 18 of their goals conceded have come in the first half of fixtures, including eight within the opening 15 minutes. On the first look St. Pauli probably have the slight edge with their home-field advantage and favorable table position, and even a more in-depth look into the historic meetings between these two sides reaffirms St. Pauli’s favorable status. There is no side which St. Pauli have beaten more often in their history than Holstein Kiel, and the two meetings between these two sides in the 2. Bundesliga last year both went the way of Die Kiezickier. Prediction: St. Pauli Win SC Freiburg v Borussia MönchengladbachSC Freiburg endured a nightmare outing in the Bundesliga last Saturday, falling to a crushing 4-0 defeat in Dortmund. To make matters worse, Julian Schuster’s side saw both midfielder Patrick Osterhage and center-forward Junior Adamu sent off, compounding an already calamitous afternoon. The loss was a perfect storm of errors, including questionable decisions in Schuster’s lineup. His choice to recall seasoned veterans Nicolas Höfler (34) and Lucas Höler (30) backfired, as neither managed to meet the demands of Freiburg’s high-energy system. Höfler, in particular, has struggled to adapt under Schuster’s management, posing a sharp contrast to his pivotal role under Christian Streich last term. While Höfler started 26 Bundesliga matches in the previous campaign, he has made the starting eleven just twice this season, with both fixtures ending in defeat... ![]() Continue reading this post for free in the Substack app |
