What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ Its Wall Street Journal official: Googling Is for Old People. The article contains some interesting facts, like that 2025 projections show that “Google’s share of the U.S. search-advertising market will fall below 50% for the first time since the company began tracking it.” Also, it’s full of bold opinions, such as “AI is to search what e-commerce was to Walmart.” BTW— here’s a way around the paywall.

→ Here’s a look at Google’s release and promotion of the Google Shopping Black Friday Deals Hub, which is similar to last year’s, but turned up to 11. Speaking of Black Friday, FWIW, early Salesforce analysis of the shopping holiday suggests:

- $33.6B spent online was spent online on Thanksgiving

- 72% of that shopping was done on mobile

- 8% YOY increase in the USA, 6% globally on Thanksgiving

- 14% YOY increase in the USA, 7% globally through Cyber Week (so far)

Black Friday results to follow, but it seems like there’s reason for optimism.

→ When I read about how “a growing parasite ecosystem is flourishing” using Google Search by “buying once trusted publications and turning them into crypto and gambling shills,” I can’t help but wonder which of my readers is getting rich off it.

→ All sitelinks search box feature documentation has been removed by Google and the 'nositelinkssearchbox' rule has been archived. Pour one out.

→ Update for those watching Forbes post-penalty— it’s got the number one spot for Gladiator 2 reviews. Seems normal for a business magazine, right? I mean, it’s not like there are sites dedicated to movie reviews, so.

→ Speaking of manual penalties, Google’s one and only John Mueller himself has basically come out and said it would be a great idea to start giving people warnings prior to receiving a manual action, but he doesn’t see it happening.

→ ICYMI: here’s a detailed look at the DOJ’s plan to end Google’s search monopoly. Here’s another analysis focusing on the fact that while the DOJ Says Google Controls 91% Of Ad Market; Google Says 10%.

AI Insight 🤖

→ This report out of Columbia’s School of Journalism, titled How ChatGPT Search (Mis)represents Publisher Content. TLDR; “publishers face the risk of their content being misattributed or misrepresented regardless of whether they allow OpenAI’s crawlers,” as ChatGPT still prefers to “conjure a response out of thin air” rather than “admit it could not access an answer.”

→ OpenAI has faced a lot of lawsuits, but this is the first time it’s been simultaneously sued by all of a country's major news publishers— Canada, to be specific. That’s a nice one to hang on the mantle.

→ Speaking of, Sam Altman’s biometric “global identity system” that uses iris scanning and an ominous “orb” has landed in Brazil. The TLDR? It’s giving dystopian sci-fi.

→ Perplexity has promised to make a hardware device “that will reliably answer your questions voice to voice.” We’ll see, I guess.

→ This guide to Reddit marketing is probably the most thorough I’ve seen yet.
