TikTok just released its report on the year’s biggest trends and moments.

The report begins with some celebratory stories of small businesses using TikTok to grow quickly. Interestingly, the number of TikTok Shop LIVE sessions hosted each month nearly tripled this year.

Other top categories included BookTok, music, #SportsOnTikTok, and education.

Melanie Perkins got the idea for Canva after she saw how complicated and expensive it was to create even simple things, like an advertisement or a website. She believed there had to be a better way.

Though she had a huge vision from the beginning, she niched down hard to build the MVP first. She got a small loan, chased profitability, and steadily grew over the next few years.

A trip to San Francisco helped Melanie see that she was capable of building out her big vision for her design product. She also ended up connecting with her eventual CPO and CTO there.

That trip gave her the inspiration and the connections to finally try to build the all-in-one platform that she initially envisioned.
