What I’m listening to

“Marry Jane” (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music) by Abbie Callahan. I found this track while searching for new bluegrass musicians on Spotify. I was hoping for a short track I could use to time my nightly 2–2.5 minutes of rotator cuff exercises. Abbie’s vocals are what entranced me, not the marijuana references. What a voice!

What I’m reading

“52 things I learned in 2024” For at least a decade, Tom Whitwell, founder of Music Thing Modular, has been documenting the 52 things he’s learned each year. You can find previous editions at this link. Here are a few sample entries from this year:

Honey I’m enjoying

​Premium MGO 1000+ Mānuka Honey from Manukora. I love this smooth and creamy Mānuka honey, and I use it before bed to help with sleep. Per the late Seth Roberts, PhD, and for reasons unclear to me, a tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed into hot water (or decaf tea) before bed seems to dramatically accelerate sleep onset time. Fun fact: Mānuka honey can only be produced in New Zealand from the nectar of the Mānuka tea tree flower. It blossoms for two to six weeks during the summer, and bees collect the nectar and pollen.

Soothing videos I’m watching

All of these videos are from creator Li Ziqi (李子柒), who has amassed 21.5M subscribers on YouTube alone. Li stepped out of the spotlight in 2021 shortly after breaking the Guinness World Record for the most subscribers for a Chinese language channel on YouTube. Following negotiations with her agency Weinan, Li is back, sharing her serene landscapes and idyllic activities. It doesn’t hurt that she’s as beautiful as she is crafty. No Chinese knowledge required, as the visuals drive everything.

Airline I am loving

​Hawaiian Airlines. My recent flights on Hawaiian Airlines have been my best-ever domestic flight experiences. No close second place. Starlink onboard allows you to use uninterrupted Wi-Fi from boarding to 30,000 feet and back down. The staff are phenomenal, as is the food. They give you iPads with movies and entertainment instead of janky screens and remotes made in the ’80s. A++. Hawaiian Airlines has made Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards (voted on by readers) for the last 14 years as well as the Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards nine out of the last 10 years. Nice work, guys!
