Following up from that, the next stage is creating your content. However, not so fast.

We could easily jump into content creation at this point, but there are 2 very significant steps we would have missed:

We want to do more investigation into whether we really have a chance to rank for these keywords. Why?

Let’s take an example:

The first keyword in the screenshot above is “LinkedIn resume builder” - we are going to analyze the top 10 ranking pages to see how to best approach our intention to rank for this keyword.

My SEO tool is showing me that these are the top 10 ranking pages in the US. You can do a quick search on Google to compare but the results should be fairly similar.

Looking at the DR (Domain Rating) column in the screenshot above, the lowest DR is 58. Our new website has a domain rating of 0. This means that a lot of high authority websites have targeted this keyword.

So why was it categorized as a low difficulty keyword? Because of the other columns:

In summary, despite the pages being from websites with very high authority, the metrics of the pages specifically are very low.

I know you want the real answer: can we compete with our domain rating of 0 at this point? Yes we can.

Let’s check the second part of this analysis.

Upon clicking on each of the pages, I found that 40% of those top pages were commercial pages going to actual "LinkedIn resume builder” product marketing pages with sign up or purchase buttons. They look like this:

30% of the pages are going to LinkedIn pages with thin content. 1 page is going to a Reddit thread, and another 1 result is the “People also Ask” questions.

No articles or blog posts ranking for this keyword.

In order to stand a chance with this keyword, we need to create a commercial page that can outcompete the ranking commercial pages. The reality is we won’t displace the LinkedIn, Reddit and “People also ask” results.

Since we are selling a resume builder, we can displace any of the ranking resume builders.

Our next move is to make a “LinkedIn resume builder” page, like the one in the screenshot above, and just do a bit better than the competition by:

This exercise was just an example of how we analyze keywords to find real viable keywords, and the best content format for them to rank. You can do the same analysis for your website.
