What military training can teach creators

I don’t know about you but 2025 just hit different than 2024. It’s probably also because I’m in Europe and we’re everyone’s laughing stock right now.

But also because I completed basic military training in the last two weeks. I lost 10 pounds while gaining muscle, discipline and new skills.

On the second-to-last day, everything came together, and we “ambushed” a fictitious group called “execution rebellion” and obliterated them with blanks.

The entire process taught me two interesting things for creators.

Yes, you should learn one skill and monetize it. But knowing just that one skill isn’t enough to start a business and make money with it.
You need other people to make your “ambush” successful.

Let me explain this a bit.

You can be the best sniper in the world, but if you’re in the wrong spot, you’ll never hit an enemy.

The same goes for creators. You can be the best writer in the world but if you can’t sell a product or service, you’ll stay broke.

The military training taught me seven complementary skills I can use not only when I’m in the field but also in my daily life.

And the best advice I, as a newly appointed sergeant in the Dutch Navy can give you: go deep in one skill that gives you tons of energy. But don’t forget to develop secondary skills to help sell your primary skills.

For example, go deep on writing, but don’t forget sales, landing page building, persuasion and sales techniques, and to be a great person to be around.

That last part was something I used a lot throughout the training. I was one of the main characters in the group. I made myself responsible for the atmosphere and that’s also why I was asked to be “IC” (group elder) and to be responsible for the group towards the instructors.

That would’ve never happened ten years ago because I was too focused on one thing. These days, I’m a well-rounded soldier sergeant who can make people laugh and sell.

YouTube is enhancing its Shorts with Google’s Veo 2 AI, which allows creators to generate HD video clips from text prompts.
