The New York Times - This electric blanket is kinda ugly

But it works like a charm

The Recommendation

February 18, 2025

Today we’re wrapped up in a warm blanket. Also: the very best Presidents’ Day deals still kicking, some sock-like slippers we love, and very cute matching jammies.

“The only thing I look forward to about winter is curling up under this electric blanket”

Let us first say: Style is not what this blanket is for. “It’s not the kind of thing I’d leave out in my living room or even on top of my bed,” writes editorial director Marguerite Preston.

What it is for, however, at least for Marguerite, is burrowing under after a long, hard February day. It’s for keeping her side of the bed delightfully toasty. It’s for giving her something to look forward to at the end of every too-short, too-dark, too-cold winter day.

This machine-washable (!) blanket has a different texture on each side: One surface is velvety and plush, while the other is fleece-like and warm. It emits a soothing warmth, and you can precisely dial in your preference from the 20 heat settings—whether you like a hardly-there pleasant embrace or want to feel like you’re sleeping in the Sahara.

One last thing: In defense of adult blankies

The Baloo weighted blanket we love, pictured on a green background.
Baloo

This well-balanced, crisp, quilt-like blanket holds its own on a well-dressed bed, can go in the washer and dryer, and comes in a conveniently petite throw size.

One downside, though? “It takes some effort to crawl out from my blanket once I’ve already settled under it,” writes senior editor Joanne Chen. “Want a glass of water? Get it yourself, please; I have a weighted blanket on me. Can’t find the remote? Wish I could help, but, you know … weighted blanket. Sometimes I feel bad about that. But, secretly, having an excuse to not get up might just be the best thing about this cozy bag of rocks.”

Another great thing? It’s on sale right now→
