The sight of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the leader of a U.S. ally at war, being hectored and chastised by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance during a fractious Oval Office meeting will live long in the memory.

But how are those living in Ukraine feeling? That’s the question that Lena Surzhko Harned, an expert on post-Soviet politics at Penn State, addresses in today’s lead story. While there have been some Ukrainians who have questioned whether Zelenskyy could have handled the situation differently, for the large part people have rallied behind the president, she explains.

But alongside this sense of unity, there is also a growing recognition in Ukraine that relations with the U.S. will look very different with Trump in the White House: “Beyond the headlines and initial reactions from Ukrainian politicians, journalists and civilians, there is also another sentiment that is emerging: resignation to the new reality,” Surzhko Harned writes.

And what should we make of Trump’s and Vance’s roles in the encounter? Karrin Vasby Anderson, a rhetoric and political communication scholar at Colorado State University, notes in her new piece that some observers compared the U.S. president’s behavior to that of a mafioso. That seems apt, she writes, given the Mafia and MAGA Republicanism share some traits: They are both patriarchal, autocratic leaning and demand loyalty.

But that approach doesn’t make for good diplomacy, Anderson concludes. “Trump’s blow-up at Zelenskyy is much more than a foreign policy snafu,” she explains. “It’s a preview of what will happen when toxic masculinity drives U.S. foreign policy.”
