The flip side: privacy risks and AI reliability in a field where mistakes can be costly.

The FDA has flagged concerns about AI sometimes misinterpreting medical data. OpenAI’s Whisper-powered transcription software has shown that errors still happen. And when it comes to healthcare, even minor mistakes can have serious consequences.

Then there’s the question of data security. Microsoft insists Dragon Copilot follows strict compliance rules, but can any AI handling sensitive patient records ever be completely secure?

Does it feel like everything tech-related is getting worse—constant glitches, endless ads, and simple tasks now requiring multiple apps just to function? Customer service has been replaced by chatbots that only paste FAQ answers in help chats. 

This decline isn’t new. In 2022, Corey Doctorow coined the term “enshittification” to describe how digital platforms—social media, ride-sharing, dating apps—start out great, then slowly degrade as they prioritize business customers and shareholders over users.

Three years later, we’ve found a new term to once again describe, just that. The “Rot economy” — coined by Ed Zitron — describes how Big Tech’s obsession with quarterly growth and shareholder profits has led to higher prices and worse products. So many unicorns that once enjoyed overinflated values are now struggling as VC funding dries up.

Some theorise that the rot economy will lead to better days for startups. 

There’s some truth to that. We’re already seeing people leaving X for Bluesky and ditching Google Search for Reddit. Maybe the key to a successful startup is sustainable growth and happy employees rather than trying to be the next $100B giant.

Outsmart The System

Ask anyone, getting a job is a grueling process. People spend months—sometimes years—training for technical interviews that test their ability to solve obscure problems on the spot, only to realise that none of that skill was need for the real job. Naturally, some annoyed college grads are trying to Kobiyashi Maru the system.

For example, a Columbia University student — Roy Lee — built an AI-powered tool to ace technical interviews. His program, Interview Coder, instantly solves coding problems by capturing an image and feeding it to ChatGPT. It worked. He secured internship offers from Amazon, Meta, and TikTok—until another miserable, jealous bloke tattled to Columbia. Rather than fight the charges, Lee decided to leave the university.

There’s a larger point to be made here. 

Lee argues that the hiring process is broken. Companies like FAANG rely on outdated tests that favor memorization over real-world skills. The FDA wouldn’t hire doctors based on their ability to recite anatomy textbooks, so why should tech giants filter engineers this way?

His story has sparked debate. If AI can pass these tests, do they still measure human skill?
