QuickScope - Everything we know about the PS5 so far

We celebrate the 19-year anniversary of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction for PC, which is an expansion pack for the original Diablo II game, adding a fifth act, new character classes, and new weapons, the ten-year anniversary of the North American release of Sin & Punishment: Star Successor for the Wii, and the three-year anniversary of the North American release of Valkyria Revolution for the PS4.

Everything we know about the PS5 so far
As one of the biggest jumps in console tech since the PS2, the PS5 has us hyped, especially given they've yet to even have a solid release date. Nonetheless, the stream of information that was revealed at Sony's PS5 event on June 11th is more than enough to keep us going until we can get our hands on the console.
Let's review what we know about the PS5's specs Sony has provided us with:
  • CPU: AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz
  • GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz
  • Internal Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • Memory Interface: 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit
  • Optical Drive: 4k UHD Blu-ray drive
What does this actually mean for our gaming experience? In terms of graphics, the PS5 will feature near-photorealistic environments and object textures. The hardware and software are able to deal with a phenomenal amount of data. Along with ray-tracing, up to 8k resolution, and 120 fps, the PS5's graphics will be 'unreal'.
The PS5's audio features are sometimes overlooked. It will feature 3D audio capabilities. For example, if you hear raindrops on the PS5, the PS5 has the capability to hear individual raindrops, all as individual sound sources in relation to a player.
As for hardware, the PS5's upgrade to an SSD from its predecessor's HDD means you will experience 'near-instant' load times.

[SPOILER ALERT] Naughty Dog Opens Up About The Last of Us Part 2 Leaks
2 months before The Last of Us Part 2 was released, there was a massive plot leak. The leak was about a scene that happens early on in the game, about Joel's death. Joel's death is the thing that kicks off Ellie's revenge mission, setting up the rest of the game. It's a big, impactful moment - one that would have been best to experience for yourself. Some people saw the leaks, decided they didn't like the story and made up their minds. Even now, if we put out an article about the game, someone will inevitably post something about Joel's death. It left a huge impact on Naughty Dog, the game developers. Creative director Neil Druckmann explained,

"It was one of the worst days of my life when the leak happened. I saw it happen in real-time. I saw it when it hit YouTube. We're all panicking, asking them to take it down. Then there's a lag so it takes like an hour to take it down. It had maybe a thousand views when it all got taken down. Then you just sit there and your fucking heart sinks'

On one level it proved to the studio that the scene works. Naughty Dog wanted the players to feel how Ellie felt in that moment: angry, hateful, disgusted. If internet comments around the leaks were a yardstick for hitting those emotions, it was a success.
