A sudden drop in new donations this month is sending up a red flag for our team.




A pandemic infecting millions. A worsening economic crisis throwing millions more out of work. And a shameless demagogue in the White House making the problems worse.

Times like these cry out for independent journalism that exposes the greed, corruption, and incompetence at the highest levels of power, but most newsrooms are slashing their budgets for investigative reporting.

Thanks to the generous support of readers like you, The Intercept has been able to chart a different path, continuing the fearless coverage we’re known for. But the same forces wreaking havoc on other segments of society could hurt our long-term financial health as well.

As soon as the economy crashed, we saw an uptick in the number of people canceling their monthly recurring donations. And halfway through July, we’re already almost $20,000 behind the pace on meeting our monthly fundraising goal.

We don't blame anyone who is being forced to cut back on their donations in these times. We know how hard it is for the millions who have lost jobs or who have seen their businesses shut down through no fault of their own.

But I can't overstate how valuable monthly sustaining donors are for a nonprofit publication like The Intercept. These recurring donors allow us to plan future coverage, providing ongoing support that we know we can count on no matter what.

The gradual increase in cancellations from monthly donors was already concerning, but the sudden drop in new donations this month is sending up a red flag for our team. And the Trump administration’s criminally incompetent response to the pandemic means that we could be living with this virus — and the economic crisis it has caused — for years.

The good news is that every time we’ve asked Intercept readers to step up and close a gap in our budget, you’ve come through in a huge way. In this time of crisis, we need to expand our coverage, not cut back. That means we need everyone who can afford to give to chip in today.
