Kenosha, Jerry Falwell Jr., and an Election Day Asteroid
No images? Click here Good morning. It's Tuesday, Aug. 25, and we're covering violent protests over a police shooting in Wisconsin, a case of poisoning in Russia, and Jerry Falwell Jr.'s (maybe) resignation. Have feedback? Let us know at hello@join1440.com. First time reading? Sign up here. NEED TO KNOWJacob Blake Shooting Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) called 125 members of the state's National Guard to help quell violent protests that erupted in the city of Kenosha following a police-involved shooting of a Black man Sunday afternoon. The incident, in which 29-year-old Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, was captured on video (warning: graphic content) from across the street by a bystander; officers did not have body cameras equipped. A number of buildings and vehicles were burned overnight, with widespread looting reported. Blake entered surgery and was listed in stable condition as of this morning. An attorney for Blake said he had been attempting to intervene in a domestic incident when police arrived. Police have not yet released details and the Wisconsin Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the incident. The shooting comes three months after the killing of George Floyd during an arrest by Minneapolis officers sparked nationwide and international protests over police brutality. A grand jury is considering adding civil rights charges in that case. Russian Poisoning ConfirmedRussian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned, German doctors confirmed yesterday. The specific substance has not been identified but tests revealed the presence of cholinesterase inhibitors, a chemical family that includes nerve agents. Navalny, one of President Vladimir Putin's most vocal critics, is said to have fallen acutely ill during a Thursday flight from the city of Tomsk to Moscow; aides suspect the poison was slipped in his tea before departure from the airport. Doctors originally refused to release Navalny on a chartered flight to Germany, saying he was too sick to be transported—critics say the delay was meant to let the poison clear his system to avoid identification. Navalny remains in a medically induced coma, but doctors say he is expected to survive the attack. The attack echoes the 2018 poisoning of ex-intelligence officer Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom, along with many other recent examples. Jerry Falwell Jr. (Likely) ResignsAfter a night of conflicting statements, Jerry Falwell Jr. appears to have resigned as president and chancellor of Liberty University following a bombshell report alleging he and his wife carried on a sexual relationship with a longtime business associate. Falwell had gone public the previous day saying his wife had carried on an affair—but did not indicate any involvement on his part. He also alleged the associate, Giancarlo Granda, tried to extort the couple. Granda reportedly provided Reuters text and photo evidence documenting the claims. One of the most prominent evangelical leaders in the US, Falwell had led the university since taking over for his father, Jerry Falwell Sr., in 2007. He significantly expanded the university's size and political clout—he was the first major evangelical leader to endorse President Trump in 2016—but had come under increasing pressure following a string of scandals and reports of questionable business practices.
