I pride myself on being open and transparent in this newsletter. I hope that’s why you read it – I share any success in freelancing I have so that you can enjoy similar achievements in your own self-employed business. I also share when things aren’t going well as I know how lonely that feels when you work for yourself.
So today I’m going to be transparent about the behind-the-scenes of this newsletter. Back in March, when the full effects of the pandemic started to take hold, I sat down and worked out the minimum number of paying subscribers I need to keep this newsletter going. It’s a number that brings in enough revenue so that I can pay Léo to draw the doodles and to compensate for the 1.5 days it takes me to put it together.
I’m currently skating very close to that number. If I drop below that minimum number of subscribers it won’t just be the subscriber-only content that goes, I will have to stop the entire newsletter.
The Professional Freelancer is reader-funded. The small percentage of readers who pay make the entire publication possible. The membership model allows me to continue to publish the free version of the newsletter for the thousands of freelancers who read it each week. I chose a reader-funded model over an advertising model because it keeps me accountable only to my readers, allowing me to focus on providing you with independent service journalism.
If you are in a position to subscribe, I’m currently offering 20% off annual subscriptions.
A subscription gives you access to resources, tools and support to help get your freelance business to where you want it to be. These includes:
Work opportunities, including a database of who’s accepting work right now
Access to the private Slack group and members’ directory
Exclusive content such as in-depth guides and resources on increasing your income and clients
Members-only virtual events with superstar freelancers and regular AMAs with me
Each month, I theme the members’ content. This month is all about finding regular work. To give you an idea of that type of content you can expect, I’ve unlocked this week’s members-only post, which is on five types of regular freelance work and how to get them.
Also, I wanted to share the members-content schedule for the rest of the month so you know what’s coming up:
August 7: Five different types of regular freelance work and how to get them
August 13 (5 PM BST): Webinar with freelance journalist Wudan Yan on finding regular freelance work. (Live webinar)
August 19: How to turn existing clients into regular clients (Email resource)
August 26: Ask Me Anything on regular freelance work (Online thread)
When you pay for a subscription, you’re also supporting independent service journalism for the freelance community. The bulk of the content I provide is free and open to all. I don’t want to put all the content behind a paywall because I want to help as many freelancers as possible and for money not to be a barrier to that. The percentage of readers who pay make the entire publication and community possible.
I understand that not everyone is in a position to subscribe. The number one reason I’ve lost subscribers over the last few months has been the financial pressure that all of us are under right now. However, if you are in a position to support, even if it’s just for a month (you can cancel at any time), you’d be keeping this newsletter going.
If you have any questions about membership or anything else you’d like to share with me about the newsletter, just reply directly to this email.
Thank you,
Anna 💌
