The Generalist - RFS 100 | What's next?

Welcome to new subscribers. RFS 100 exists to share and discuss startup ideas. Once a week, you'll get ten new "request for startups" from great investors, entrepreneurs, and operators. We're taking a brief pause as we gather new ideas.

Noble idea warriors,

When Aashay and I started RFS a couple of months ago, we didn't envision it would take on such a life of its own. As we mentioned last week, we've connected 100+ investors and founders, met many awesome new folks, and kicked off a vibrant community.

Now comes the fun part. Which idea was your favorite? We've collected the full 100 here. Feel free to share it with other friends looking to kick off their founding adventure.

After that, it's time to vote. To save you scrolling through a Typeform list of all 100, we've pulled out the ideas that received the most responses. If we've missed one of your favorites, there's space for write-ins.

We'll announce the most popular idea next week. That brings us to what you can expect going forward. As we look ahead to Volume 2, we've brainstormed how to best take things forward in terms of personnel, new features, and collaborations.

Personnel

The response to RFS has been an awesome gift but has also required time. With that in mind, Aashay is going to take a step back. I've loved getting to collaborate with him and am grateful he'll continue to share his ideas with us from time-to-time. If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to sign up for his personal newsletter, which is always thoughtful.

Meanwhile, I'll be leaning in. To that end, if you have any questions or comments going forward, feel free to respond to this email. You'll notice it's a different address, a reflection of RFS as a part of The Generalist family (along with The S-1 Club).

Collaborations

I posted a question in the chat this week. Namely, do members want to collaborate and dive deeper into certain ideas? There was a clear answer.

Which idea should we dig into first? Of course, that's very much up to you and your vote. Once we've picked a good RFS to start with, we'll assemble a team to create a plan of attack. A "Day 1" dossier, as one member put it.

Collaborations

To date, RFS has been eclectic. That's part of its beauty. There's also value in focus, however. Entrepreneurs often begin their journeys by focusing on a sector and building out a series of theses. To make that easier, we're going to be collaborating with some of the best vertically-focused writers. In Volume 2 you can look forward to:

  • Superorganizers x RFS. Dan Shipper and I are curating our favorite productivity/thinking tool submissions to share as a standalone issue. We hope it'll be a useful resource for anyone thinking about how to craft the next Notion, Superhuman, or Roam.
  • Out of Pocket x RFS. Some of the most popular ideas from Volume 1 focused on healthcare. Nikhil Krishnan and I are joining forces to tap the sharpest folks we know to bring more submissions to the table.
  • Fintech Today x RFS. I think you see where this is going. Ian Kar and Mengxi Lu are my favorite fintech aficionados. Expect inspiration to build the next N26, Affirm, Plaid, or Stripe.

I can't wait to bring these thinkbois into the fold. If there are people you think we should talk to in those sectors — or beyond — please send them my way. It always means a lot.

As usual, we'll end with a quote, this time from Charles Darwin.

It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.

It's a privilege to collaborate with you all. I'm excited about the great days ahead.

— Mario

P.S. Just a friendly reminder to vote :)

Onwards :)

We're still growing! Awesome. We're up to 2,653 inquisitive minds. We'd love your help in keeping the momentum up. Can we hit 2,750 by next week? 3,000? If you have friends that would dig 100 startup ideas, we'd be grateful if you'd shoot this email their way. If you'd like to share on Twitter, here's a ready-made tweet. (You can still edit, of course.)

Thank you all.
