Re-Envisioning “Equality”

On the heels of Women’s Equality Day, as we celebrate how far women’s rights have progressed since 1920, we must recognize that a pivotal moment in women’s equality hasn’t happened yet: Trans women are fighting to exist, much less vote.

One-third of trans people with jobs have experienced employment discrimination, and one in six have been fired due to their gender identity or expression. Before the pandemic, the unemployment rate was three times higher for trans people. And just eight months into 2020, more trans people have been killed this year than all of 2019.

We have a long way to go to reach equality. And as we work toward a better, more equitable world, let’s look to trans women — specifically Black trans women — whose existence in and of itself is the vision of our future. They’ve been at the forefront of every major movement for positive change. They’re the leaders. It is time that we use our power, if we have it, (and our money, if we can) to make their vision come to life.

We can’t fully celebrate Women’s Equality Day until all women are equal.
