The Biden campaign on Wednesday announced a record-breaking $364.5 million fundraising haul in the month of August, boosted by Sen. Kamala Harris’ selection as Biden’s running mate and the Democratic Convention.

Critical Quote

“Democrats united in a way that pundits deemed impossible in the primary. When Kamala Harris joined me as my running mate, we were able to continue with this momentum and enter the most unconventional convention with a resolve to make our party, and our country, stronger in the process,” Biden said in a statement, adding that the figure “blows me away.”

Key Facts

The Biden campaign boasted the “best month of online fundraising in American politics,” having raised 57% of their haul, $205 million, from “online, small-dollar donations.”

The total is more than twice as much as the $143 million Hillary Clinton raised in August 2016, which was in itself a record, and the $140 million Biden and the DNC raised in July.

Biden's enormous figure is bolstered by the $48 million the campaign raised in the 48 hours after Harris’ selection was announced and the $70 million brought in during the Democratic Convention.

The campaign touted 1.5 million first-time donations in August, with a total of 4 million donors throughout the campaign.

The campaign also told supporters that 97% of donations were from “grassroots supporters, folks like yourself chipping in to emails like this.”
