Issue #527 - September 01, 2020

Hey all,

Pek here. It's been a crazy almost three years, with a lot of ups and downs. But the time has come to admit that I am not able to achieve what I set out to do when I first started this journey.

Don't get me wrong, I regret nothing. I gave my best, and even though I didn't hit my goal, I was able to do more than I expected. And the community has been incredibly supportive, which is the whole reason why we are where we are today. Why we are at all, in fact.

So three years ago I set out to create a software developing magazine that I thought was missing from our industry. And it started as a newsletter, to see if the type of content would resonate with the audience. And when I felt that there was interest, I went ahead and started on a more difficult (and expensive) endeavor of publishing an actual print magazine.

And while we received a lot of encouraging words, my lack of experience in this domain and my eagerness to launch before its time, meant that we never had the momentum it needed to make it a success. But that didn't stop me. Even after the Kickstarter campaign didn't hit its goal. Issue after issue we were making amazing progress, in content, quality, team, everything. Everything, but marketing. Which was (and still is) my weakest point. And while I tried everything I could, and got better results in each consecutive issue, the numbers where still nowhere near where they had to.

And so with heavy heart I am announcing that Human Readable and all of its projects (including this newsletter) will be paused until further notice.

I say "pause" for a reason. There is a bright side to all this.

For one, I have joined a company that really believes in my vision, and there are long term plans of reviving everything. And they know marketing.

Also, Alex, who has been writing all the summaries of Morning Cup of Coding for over a year now, is creating a spiritual successor called A Byte of Coding. If you liked this newsletter, than I highly recommend subscribing to that one. He is a firsthand example of a junior developer that has seen the benefits of diversifying their knowledge and going out their comfort zone to learn something new. And is passionate about keeping this tradition going.

Finally, if you want to be the first to learn when Human Readable is back, probably the best way would be to connect with me on LinkedIn. If you don't like that, the second best would be my ProductHunt account, and third my Twitter.

I have decided to completely close the newsletter project. I am not selling it, nor transferring it to anybody. Your email is (and always has been) safe with me. It will be up for a few more weeks, and then it will be shut down.

This wasn't an easy decision to make. I've been mulling over this for a few weeks now. I did not want to admit that it's over. But I also can't continue down this path anymore.

I want to thank everyone who has subscribed. And a special thank you to all my Patreons, Paypal donators, and magazine readers.

I can't wait to come back bigger and better :)

Cheers,

pek
