5-Bullet Friday

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of “5-Bullet Friday,” a list of what I’m pondering and exploring.

What I’m listening to —
Atul Gawande on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard. This is an excellent dance. On one side, Atul Gawande, MD, (@Atul_Gawande) is one of my favorite thinkers and authors. The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, written by Atul, sits face out on my bookshelf as a constant reminder. On the other side, Dax (@daxshepard) is one of the best interviewers in the game, and this episode is a great showcase of his skill level. He’s able to intelligently tackle the serious without sounding too serious but also without swinging too far into comedy for comedy’s sake. That is a very hard needle to thread well.

What I’m using daily —
Big Berkey water filter. This was recommended to me by a former Navy SEAL in March, and I’ve bought several units since. These were his selling points, roughly paraphrased: If you can find a swamp or dirty pond, you now have drinkable water. If you have a pool, you now have no reason to stockpile bottles of water. Sold! Here is the partial description from their website: “The black berkey elements that come standard in this system purify both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. This Berkey water filter is our most popular system and is perfect for everyday home kitchen use, outdoor activities, and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure, or treated water may not be available. This system removes pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cysts, and parasites entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes.” If it’s sold out on their website, which happens often these days, you can also try Amazon.

Feature of Gmail that I’m finding incredibly useful —
Google Contacts (contacts.google.com). Just type contacts.google.com into your browser URL bar, and you’ll see something I’d never accessed until this week. Why this week? Because I’m retiring a bunch of email addresses, and I wanted to know whom I’ve emailed most often from the inboxes that are headed to the garbage bin. This feature—hidden in plain sight—makes it super simple, and you can export your list of VIPs. One important note: “Frequently contacted” appears to include people who email you as well, so it requires some minor cleanup to remove newsletters and so on.

Documentary I’m watching —
The Work. This documentary tore my heart apart but simultaneously gave me tremendous hope. It strikes me as particularly important for men (or those who want to better understand men) to watch, but the intensity isn’t for everyone. It’s exhausting to watch. Check out this short trailer, and you’ll see what I mean. As one reviewer put it, “The Work is a ‘prison film’ but not as you know it, and yet it is perhaps the most emotionally draining the genre has ever seen…. Set in Folsom prison, a group of men from the outside participate in a group therapy session with convicts, many of them violent offenders. In the space of four days, prisoners and free men alike engage in a weekend of deeply intimate conversations in which they reveal their darkest fears, dangerously repressed memories, and their most complex feelings. The resulting drama is a fascinating exercise in emotional exorcism.” So you’re not caught scratching your head at my recommendation, note that the first 20–30 minutes seem somewhat slow. It picks up at around the 30–35-minute mark.

Quote I’m pondering —
“The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself.”
Michel de Montaigne

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Helix Sleep Mattresses. I started sleeping on a Helix in 2017, and I’m still sleeping on one today. They were named best overall mattress of 2020 by GQ, Wired, and Apartment Therapy. My sleep has really improved, and I can tell you that because I track it all with HRV, heart rate, temperature, etc. So consider taking their two-minute sleep quiz. Based on body type and how you sleep, their algorithm will identify and match you to your ideal mattress. They also offer a 100-night trial and free shipping, plus free returns. Helix mattresses are manufactured in the USA and cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars less than comparable mattress-store options because they ship directly to you and cut out high-margin middlemen. As a subscriber to “5-Bullet Friday,” you can receive an exclusive and limited-time offer of $175 off of any Standard model or $225 off of any Luxe model (I sleep on the Midnight Luxe), plus two free pillows, which is a better offer than their public Labor Day sale. Just use codes TIM175LD for Standard models or TIM225LD for Luxe models at checkout. Offer ends at 11:59 PM PT on September 27, 2020. Cannot be combined with other offers. Enjoy!
