Why should I take your SOLID in Real-World iOS Apps course?

"Have you ever found a piece of code that you couldn't understand at all, and struggled to change it without breaking everything else? Well, SOLID aims to prevent you ever getting into that problem by making the code better in the first place.

I think the hardest part of being a professional developer is putting a bunch of APIs together into an app that works, is bug-free, and is easy to maintain for you and your team! For example, you might hear that putting all your code into a ViewController is bad. But why is this? SOLID aims to break that 'badness' down into actual rules that you can see and – more importantly – that you can can follow and fix.

SOLID came out of a lot of work in the '90s, and has evolved steadily since. It's pretty cool to see how SOLID has stood the test of time and is still applicable in iOS development — nearly 20 years later. I think it's important to learn techniques and best practices from those who came before us!"

How do you use SOLID principles in your job?

"I use the SOLID guidelines every day in order to architect new things I'm building, so that they don't have to be rebuilt again and again. The rules help me to understand where there are points in the code that could be problematic in the future, such as putting too much logic in one place, or not dividing it up into understandable pieces."

Can you please share a cool SOLID tip with us?

"Having loads of extensions on one class might look like the code is tidier, but at the end of the day, they're still all in one class. But, if you move code carefully, you'll find that you can split that code into smaller classes that are easier to test, and therefore harder to break. Win-win!

Is there anything else we should know about your SOLID in Real-World iOS Apps course?

"This course is just a short introduction to writing 'clean code', but practices like this are part of a huge field which is really interesting. At the end of the day, just like trying out a brand new API, the best way to try this stuff is to experiment in your own codebase!"
