How To Recover From A Curveball | $500 For 5,000 Teachers | Pet Photography Awards

Hello and welcome to a new edition of the Upturn, the newsletter born out of the desire to do something that will improve the communities within our reach.

I am delighted to report that the body of research indicating that doing acts of good is good for you is growing.
This latest deep-dive analysis found that random acts of kindness, such as helping an older neighbor carry groceries, were more strongly associated with overall well-being than formal prosocial behavior, such as scheduled volunteering for a charity. The lesson is simple: kindness is a healthy lifestyle.

More stories about
helpers and carers below.

In the
Upside, a college baseball player discovers a new talent and career following a traumatic brain injury and a footwear designer relaunches her brand, this time without compromising on her aesthetic.

In Up-And-Coming, an initiative to ensure more people can vote and a food delivery business is seeking to provide easier access to ethnic grocery stores.

In Uplifting, a new film is inspiring girls to reach new heights and the comedy pet photo awards is putting a smile on your face.

Finally, in the
Wrap-Up, the numbers having an impact this week are 89, 500, 10,000,000

In 2017, Theresa Ebagua shut down her five-year-old luxury footwear brand to focus on her mental and physical health, which had been affected by constant pressure to sideline her Nigerian-inspired aesthetic to appeal to a mass market. A now reinvigorated Ebague re-launched her Chelsea Paris brand last month—her heritage no longer up for discussion.

Just in the state of Florida, a study found as many as 775,000 citizens are potentially unable to vote due to legal-related debts. Desmond Meade, voting rights activist and executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, has enlisted A-listers’ help to change that.

Food is one of the best ways to experience and appreciate a different culture. Recognizing this potential, Fola Dada and Boyede Sobitan, first and second-generation immigrants from Nigeria, cofounded OjaExpress, a food delivery platform that focuses ethnic grocery stores.
