Trump Hospitalized, Recovering

Details around President Trump's positive coronavirus test continued to emerge over the weekend, with a number of high-level officials also confirming infections. The president himself was transferred to Walter Reed military hospital—out of an abundance of caution, per his physicians—where he continued to work in full capacity.

Trump reportedly began a regimen of remdesivir (what is that?) and Regeneron’s trial antibody cocktail, a treatment currently in early-stage clinical trials. The latter includes antibody-producing immune cells harvested from recovered patients; see a scientific breakdown here. By yesterday, doctors had also added the steroid dexamethasone, typically used in more severe cases. 

Physicians have said he could be released as early as today—he took a brief drive outside the hospital to wave to supporters last night—though they also relayed his blood oxygen levels had dropped twice over the weekend. A source also said he had been given supplemental oxygen before heading to Walter Reed.

A number of cases have been linked to a White House Rose Garden ceremony for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, though it's not known which infections originated at the event. The list includes Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), Notre Dame University President Rev. John Jenkins, and former adviser Kellyanne Conway, among others. No cases are considered severe yet, though former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) checked himself into the hospital. 

Judge Barrett revealed she had previously recovered from a mild case of the virus over the summer. The outbreak is not expected to slow down her confirmation as of yet; the Senate Judiciary Committee—of which Lee and Tillis are members—is expected to begin considering Barrett Oct. 12. Sen. Ron Johnson (R), who did not attend the event but is on the committee, separately tested positive. 

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden tested negative for the virus, and said he will release the results of all future tests.

France Floods

At least two people were killed with 30 missing after torrential floods cut off access to a number of villages along the France-Italy border yesterday. An estimated 1,000 first responders, backed by military aid, have been called in to search for survivors—at least one of the victims killed was a firefighter pulled away in rapids while trying to assist a stranded motorist. The total damage is not yet known, though videos show mudslides triggered by flash flooding wiping away entire houses (w/video).

In the city of Nice, close to 2 feet of rain fell in just 12 hours—almost equal to the total annual average. City officials estimate at least 100 homes were destroyed or damaged, The downpour was brought on by Storm Alex, which is expected to trek northward across France and into the British Isles in the first part of the week.

Breonna Taylor Tapes Released

Prosecutors in Louisville, Kentucky, released audio recordings Friday capturing grand jury proceedings considering charges in the police shooting of Breonna Taylor. Normally kept private, the tapes were released after a panel member sued to make them available.

Taylor was killed when officers, armed with a no-knock warrant, exchanged gunfire with Taylor's boyfriend, who believed them to be intruders. The tapes yielded more questions than answers around one of the central points of the case. Officers say they made an attempt to announce themselves (despite the warrant) for up to a minute; one neighbor said they heard them identify as police, others dispute the claim. Officers also said they believed they were being ambushed. See an overview of the case here.

One officer has pleaded not guilty to wanton endangerment of neighbors, the only charges brought in the case. The tapes did not include Attorney General Daniel Cameron's final recommendations to the jury.
