October 2020

The Academy of American Poets invites students living in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Tribal Nations, in grades 9 through 12 to enter artwork to be considered for the National Poetry Month poster in 2021, the twenty-fifth anniversary of National Poetry Month, now the largest literary celebration in the world. The winner will be selected by judges Maira Kalman, renowned illustrator, and Renée Watson, New York Times-bestselling Young Adult author and poet. The winning student’s artwork will be printed on 100,000+ copies of the official April 2021 poster, which will be distributed for free to teachers, families, schools, libraries, and classrooms nationwide, and viewed by millions of people during next year’s celebration.

Submissions to the 2021 poster competition are now being accepted through 10/30.

“I feel quite passionately that the degree to which I have, if I have, stayed alive as a writer and changed as a writer, owes much to the intensity with which I've immersed myself in the work, sometimes very alien work, of people younger than I, people making sounds I haven't heard.”

Join the Academy of American Poets as we congratulate Chancellor Emeritus Louise Glück, who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Read a conversation between Dana Levin and Louise Glück from the 2009 issue of American Poet, the biannual journal of the Academy of American Poets, in which she discusses her relationship to teaching.
