Trump still has numerous sexual misconduct allegations against him

  • It may not be dominating the airwaves and front pages currently, but more than 20 women have accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault or misconduct. Former model Amy Dorris was the latest, saying Trump assaulted her at the 1997 US Open tennis tournament in New York. [USA Today / Alia E. Dastagir]
  • Last month, Dorris gave an exclusive interview with the Guardian in which she alleged that Trump groped her in an incident that left her feeling "sick" and "violated." Dorris was 24 at the time; Trump was 51. [Guardian / Lucy Osborne]
  • Trump, as with the other allegations, denied Dorris's account. Jenna Ellis, legal adviser to his campaign, said in a statement that Trump and his team would consider all legal means to hold the Guardian accountable for “its malicious publication of this unsubstantiated story.” [CBS News / Li Cohen]
  • But Dorris was at least the 26th woman to make such an accusation against the president. Several of them were models or pageant contestants — Trump bought Miss Universe in 1996 and established Trump Model Management in 1999. [Guardian / Lucy Osborne]
  • The allegations date back to the 1970s. Natasha Stoynoff, a magazine writer, came forward shortly before the 2016 election about an alleged incident that took place in 2005 while she was interviewing Trump and his wife Melania in Florida. [NYT / Liam Stack]
  • Another magazine writer, E. Jean Carroll, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. Carroll has filed a lawsuit against Trump and is pursuing his DNA sample to prove her case. In August, the New York state Supreme Court denied Trump’s effort to delay the proceedings. [CNN / Erica Orden]
  • Trump has tried to replace his private lawyers with the US Department of Justice to defend him in Carroll’s lawsuit. In September, Attorney General Bill Barr argued that the president was acting as the leader of the government when he denied Carroll’s accusations. [NYT / Alan Feuer and Benjamin Weiser]
  • The allegations do not seem to have had much impact on the election thus far, nor has an allegation of sexual assault against Democratic nominee Joe Biden by a former Senate staffer of his, Tara Reade. Biden denied Reade’s claims, which stem from an alleged incident in 1993, and top Democrats have stood by their support for him. [Vox / Anna North]

Mob rule continuing in Kyrgyzstan after election
  • After a tumultuous election on Sunday in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, the nation’s Central Electoral Commission annulled the results after pressure from protesters had been building. The elections were initially awarded to two parties with ties to President Sooronbai Jeenbekov. [NYT / Ivan Nechepurenko]
  • Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov, meanwhile, resigned and was replaced by Sadyr Japarov, whom protesters freed from prison. Jeebenkov, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the protests were meant not to nullify the election but to remove him from power. [BBC News]
  • Opposition groups stormed the capital city of Bishkek on Tuesday, taking control of most of the government and its buildings. Political upheaval is not uncommon in Kyrgyzstan, where two presidents have been overthrown in the past 15 years. [CNN via Reuters]
  • The two victorious parties, Birimdik and Mekenim Kyrgyzstan, allegedly used fraudulent measures to turn out votes in Sunday’s elections. Protesters had begun to gather by Monday after the results were announced, and police and security officials were struggling to control the crowds. [Foreign Policy / Colleen Wood]
  • Despite the fraud allegations, Jeebenkov said after casting his vote that “these elections are taking place under conditions of strong political competitiveness. All parties were given equal opportunities.” [Al Jazeera / Agnieszka Pikulicka-Wilczewska]
MISCELLANEOUS
After the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that the next debate between Trump and Biden would be virtual, Trump said he would not participate.

[CNN / Dan Merica, Kevin Bohn, and Chandelis Duster]

  • Facebook has announced that it will indefinitely ban all political advertisements starting on Election Day in an attempt to limit misinformation and disputes over the results, which may not be known for days or even weeks after November 3. [Politico / Nancy Scola]

  • Turkey is allegedly recruiting Syrian rebels to Azerbaijan for its ongoing conflict with Armenia, working as border guards for a private Turkish security company. The Turkish government has denied the allegations. [CNN / Kareem Khadder, Gul Tuysuz, and Tim Lister]

  • The World Trade Organization will soon name its first female director general. The WTO is down to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria and Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea for its next boss. If Okono-Iweala is chosen, she will also be the organization’s first African leader. [BBC News / Andrew Walker]
