On the Cover of ‘New York’ Magazine: The City in Extended Pause

For the cover of our October 12–25, 2020 issue, New York worked with an aerial messaging company on a custom banner that would capture a sentiment shared by many New Yorkers right now. Creating the cover image involved chartering two airplanes — one towing the banner and the other carrying photographer Alexei Hay — to fly up and down the Hudson River on the evening of October 6. Today marks a new chapter for New York: the pioneering website Curbed is joining the New York family, as our home for covering cities and city life. Like New York, Curbed will be based in New York City and largely focused on the city’s architecture and design, neighborhoods and characters, real estate and policy, power brokers and rabble-rousers.

The relaunch was done completely remotely; for the past six months, Curbed’s editors and writers have been working with the New York editorial team—and in collaboration with design, product, and technology—to build the site’s next chapter as part of the larger magazine. We hope you’ll spend some time exploring the new Curbed.
