Farmers – especially in the Midwest – overwhelmingly supported President Donald Trump in 2016. Will they do so again?

American farmers have had a rough few years. The trade war with China cost them an estimated $38 billion in lost exports. The coronavirus pandemic caused the agricultural industry more pain by shuttering schools and offices across the U.S., leading to a sharp drop in commercial food sales. And that old foe of farmers, the weather, has continued to lash out with floods and windstorms that can wipe out crops.

Despite the pain, economists Wendong Zhang and Minghao Li, who have been surveying and interviewing farmers for several years, believe Trump has an ace in his pocket.
