Morning Brew - ☕️ Live adventurously

How to embark on microadventures

I love the transition from lazy fall Sunday afternoons to productive Monday mornings.

  • My Sunday afternoons: lighting a pumpkin candle, cruising through some quality fiction, and wearing PJs all day.
  • My Monday mornings: sweating it out at 6:30am, chugging at least two cups of coffee, and feeling like a WFH pro with my new monitor setup.

How do you start off your Mondays?

Nobody else can pull off green hair and oversized clothing like Billie Eilish. On Saturday night, one of Spotify’s most-streamed female artists of 2020 took over our screens for her pay-per-view livestream, Where Do We Go?

It grossed as much as $15 million in revenue and included interactive rooms for virtual concertgoers such as an exclusive merch shop and a voting room where she encouraged fans to hit the polls. Here’s how to keep up with the 18-year-old pop star who is changing live music:

  • Read more about her mesmerizing livestream in the High Tea newsletter
  • Same interview. Same hair. New year. Here’s the teaser for The Fourth Year, her yearly interview series with Vanity Fair. Billie’s iconic quote: “That did not age well.”
  • She’s got her own doc coming to Apple TV+ and theaters in February 2021.
  • Billie and her bro, Finneas, are one of the most talented celebrity sibling duos out there. Just watch their Tiny Desk (Home) Concert for proof.

Stay Sharp

Live on the wild side: Not all of us have the time or willpower to cycle 25,000 miles around the world, but we can all embark on microadventures. Here’s how to live adventurously every day, or get inspired by other DO Lectures—talks from the world’s greatest doers.

Behind the screen: While counting down the days until season 2 of The Mandalorian, I’m nerding out about the technology that's replacing the green screen. It’s pretty damn cool.

Productivity hack: Listening to the Mario Kart soundtrack while writing a literary analysis of Hamlet will either a) power you to complete it in an hour tops or b) give you an aneurysm.

Reduce, reuse, recycle: Inspector Gadget here with the latest tips on how to repurpose your old devices, in case you plan on selling your organs to buy the iPhone 12.

Go green: It’s almost hibernation season, but instead of loading up on Annie’s Mac & Cheese, I’m going plant-based. Here’s how to start a hydroponic garden at home (perfect for apartment dwellers interested in growing winter veggies).

Design time: If you’re feeling down, apparently you need to repaint. A pandemic palette has emerged, and refreshing your walls might be the color therapy you didn’t know you needed.

For your happy hour: Earlier this fine pandemic, Stanley Tucci showed us how to make the perfect Negroni cocktail. The dapper actor is back behind the bar and bringing the Old Fashioned back in fashion.

For your main course: My college experience will forever be defined by “Two-Buck Chuck,” but now I’m moving on to bigger and better things with this guide to pairing wine with Trader Joe’s classics.

For your stretching prescription: With all of us glued to our office chairs, this two-minute relaxation exercise for your knees, ankles, and feet might be the perfect break.

For your election anxiety: De-stress while you’re waiting in line to vote with an election-anxiety playlist

For your daily flow: Ok, this is the edition of The Essentials in which I disclose my love for Peloton. In addition to the Peloton app, these 11 free fitness trials will get you through to 2021.

Dept. of Cool Ideas

Take the quiz: Discover your animal personality. My kindred spirit is a bunny, but this quiz says I’m a penguin. Try guessing why.

Insomniac: If you never get in your eight hours, torment yourself with 52 stages of insomnia

On the market: Live out your librarian fantasy by checking out the New York Public Library’s secret apartments

Good stuff: I’m about to make your Monday 20x better, especially for all the dog lovers out there.

Exercise your rights: In uplifting voting news, an astronaut voted from space, and here’s the liveliest voting line I’ve seen.

This week’s Happy Place is brought to you by Essentials reader Eric. He’s right when he said that every picture of Zion National Park in Utah is screensaver-worthy.

See you on Thursday for a special Halloween issue. And let’s hear it for candy corn (a contested candy here at the Brew). Anyone else a big fan?
