Dodgers Break Through

The Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series since 1988 last night, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 to end the series in six games. For the Dodgers, the title ends years of postseason disappointment following excellent regular seasons. The franchise had won eight straight division titles, reaching the series in 2017 and 2018, walking away empty-handed each time. 

The Dodgers were led by ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw who went 2-0, notching 14 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched. Shortstop Corey Seager—who closed out a monster postseason that included 22 hits, eight home runs, and 20 RBIs (see stats)—was named World Series MVP. Tampa Bay, whose $29M payroll was dwarfed by LA's league-leading $96M roster, made it tough at times, including a stunning walk-off victory in Game 4.

Six Days Out

With less than a week until Election Day, both President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden are executing a schedule of final campaign stops in high-value electoral targets. Trump managed three stops in Nebraska, Michigan, and Wisconsin yesterday. Meanwhile, buoyed by a steady lead in the polls, Biden played offense in Georgia, a traditional Republican stronghold that appears unexpectedly tight. Each candidate—along with their running mates, spouses, and surrogates—is expected to crisscross battleground states in the race's closing days.  

Per some models, the race is likely to come down to Pennsylvania—FiveThirtyEight has Biden's chances dropping to 30% without the state, while Trump's chances tumble to just 2%. If Trump were to win both Pennsylvania and Florida, his chances rise to 87% (see current polls). Play with the scenario generator here.

Almost 71 million have voted early so far, two-thirds of them by mail. The total (track here) is more than half of the entire 2016 turnout. In Pennsylvania, 1.9 million have cast ballots in the state as of this morning (30% of the 2016 total), with Democrats having returned 66% of their requested ballots and Republicans having returned 50%. With a recent ruling allowing mail-in ballots to be accepted until Nov. 6, the race may take days (or longer) to be called. 

Wind, Fire, and Rain

Dual fires in Southern California's Orange County forced evacuation orders for 90,000 residents yesterday. The twin blazes doubled in size overnight Monday, fueled by Santa Ana winds—powerful gusts that blow downslope (how they work) from inland mountains out toward the Pacific Ocean. Utility provider Southern California Edison said yesterday its equipment might have sparked one fire, after an anchor broke loose and struck a 12,000-volt conducting line. As of this morning, at least 20,000 acres (30 square miles) had been consumed. 

Across the country, New Orleans is prepping for the arrival of Hurricane Zeta, expected to make landfall as a Category 2 storm sometime this evening (real-time trajectory). Zeta is the 27th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, and the 11th hurricane. It's just the third time in 170 years that 11 hurricanes have been observed by this point in the calendar.
