Forbes - Trans-forming Business

Morning Banter

The second week of November kicks off Transgender Awareness Week, an annual observance to promote transgender visibility.

In recent years, companies have increasingly committed to fostering trans-inclusive workplaces and providing gender-nonconforming offerings to their clients.

Mastercard announced in 2019 that it would let transgender and non-binary people use their
chosen name, instead of their legal or given name, on credit, debit and prepaid cards. Similarly, Citi launched a marketing campaign this month to remind cardmembers that they can use their chosen first name on eligible Citi-branded credit cards and account profiles.

U.S. airlines are also offering new gender options to nonbinary and transgender folks. In March 2019, United Airlines became the first air service to offer a non-binary gender option for passengers booking flights. Customers can select M (male), F (female), U (undisclosed) or X (unspecified), to correspond with their government-issued identification. Customers can also select "Mx." in lieu of Ms./Mrs./or Mr. when booking a trip.

Yet companies, which typically place a heavier emphasis on the “LGB” in LGBTQ, still have a long distance to go on transgender inclusion, especially in their hiring practices: Transgender people experience unemployment at three times the rate of the general population and four times the national rate for those of color.
