Over a quarter-million Americans have now died from COVID-19, and rural hospitals are getting overwhelmed as cases spike. Finding an open ICU bed for a critical patient can now take a dozen calls to multiple states. To keep their emergency rooms staffed, some small hospitals are even rethinking how much potential exposure is too much to prevent doctors and nurses from working.

A rural health researcher highlights the stark choices rural hospitals are facing, and the political roadblocks making their work harder, through the first-person accounts of a Kansas doctor and a Colorado hospital administrator on the front lines.
