Hello and thanks for tuning in for another issue of our little newsletter about Spotify. It’s a holiday week, so issue #33 is a bit shorter than usual. But we still wanted to deliver all the best Spotify news that hit the newswires this week.
★In the SPOTlight★
⭐️ Can Spotify be the one to convince people to pay for podcasts?
The Swedish music giant is apparently testing out podcast-only subscription offers. But the market for paid premium podcasts is pointedly unproven.
⭐️ How Hyperpop, a small Spotify playlist, grew into a big deal
The Hyperpop playlist, which Spotify started in August 2019, began as a direct response to 100 gecs' viral rise. “The fact that so many people were talking about this project inspired us to look deeper and see if there were other artists making music like this that we didn’t know about,” Lizzy Szabo, an editor at Spotify and the playlist’s lead curator, said in a phone interview.
⭐️ Spotify launches ‘rolling reset’ on customer accounts, passwords linked to data leak
A third-party server containing Spotify credentials was uncovered by researchers.
⭐️ A retro looking Spotify player makes album artwork great again
It is called Sleevenote and shows the covers of music albums with print-like definition, on a display whose size is close to that of 7-inch vinyl discs.
⭐️ Spotify gets enhanced Megan Thee Stallion ‘Good News’ album
Snapchat and Instagram have stories, Twitter now has fleets, but it’s easy to forget that Spotify, too, has been exploring the ‘stories’ format.
⭐️ Spotify opens a marketplace for Canvas looping artwork designers
Spotify announced that it has leveraged last year’s SoundBetter acquisition to create a marketplace for artists who make short, looping visuals for Canvas. The feature, which began rolling out widely last year, is an attempt to leverage technology in order to make a more engaging alternative to the standard album art.
