Why We Need Gratitude More Than Ever | What To Read, Listen To And Watch Over Thanksgiving | And More

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you have a happy, safe and healthy day. I’ll be FaceTiming with family instead of gathering in person, but I’m grateful for loved ones who understand that staying apart is one of the best ways of showing care this year.

Because it’s a holiday, and a day meant to focus on giving thanks, this week’s newsletter is a bit different. In the sections below, you’ll find some things
the ForbesWomen team is grateful for, along with suggestions for things to read, watch, and listen to over this long holiday weekend.

But before I move on to those recommendations, I just want to thank each and every one of you for reading this newsletter every week, and for supporting our work on Forbes.com. It is an honor to tell the stories of powerful women in business
your stories!and we couldn’t do what we do without people to read our work. It’s an appreciation I feel almost daily, but on this day of thanks I want to make this doesn’t go without saying: I’m so very thankful for you!

In gratitude,
Maggie

A Few Of The People, Events And Things We’re Thankful For

Women who defy the odds. The share of women in economics is below many other male-dominated fields, and it has not increased since the 1990s. Statistics like these makes the news that one-time Fed Chair Janet Yellen is poised to become the nation’s first female Treasury Secretary all the more welcome.

Free period products in Scotland. On Tuesday, Scottish parliament unanimously passed legislation that makes the nation the first in the world to make tampons and pads free for anyone in need. The goal, say Scottish officials, is to eliminate period poverty.

Leaders who collaborate. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has been praised for steering one of the world’s most successful responses to Covid-19, on Monday revealed that she had put President-elect Joe Biden in contact with her nation’s health officials in efforts to share tactics on how to battle the pandemic.

Josephine Cochran. In 1883, at the age of 45, an unemployed Josephine Cochran decided that if no one else was going to invent a dishwashing machine, she’d do it herself. By 1885, she had a patent for her creation, and centuries later, millions of American households will use it to clean up from their Thanksgiving feasts.

The power of sisterhood. Erin and Sara Foster are mostly known for their television series, “Barely Famous.” But as investors and startup advisors, they’re not barely successful. In fact, they are the common thread between Bumble and Mirror, two female-founded companies that had buzzy exits this year.

Checklist

Here are some things to read, watch and listen to over the holiday weekend:

Do you still have work to do over Thanksgiving? Read this guide on five ways to find relaxation during your working holiday.

If you want to use some down time to get your financial life in order, listen to one of these money podcasts that can help you turbocharge your investing skills.

Did you know that Forbes has its own YouTube channel? We do, and there are some really great videos to watch, like a dive into tobacco heiress Doris Duke and the suspicious circumstances around the death of her best friend. It’s part of our Dark Capital series that explores the intersection of business, wealth and crime.

True crime isn’t your speed? Consider adding to your watch list the new film of recordings from Taylor Swift’s Folklore album that began streaming Wednesday at midnight on Disney+.

If you’ve had a hard year, like too many people have, and it feels impossible to show any gratitude, read this piece on why a difficult year like 2020 is when we need gratitude the most
