December 2020
The Academy of American Poets is pleased to present the Inaugural Poem Project and Contest for Students. Richard Blanco, who will serve as this year’s contest judge, is one of only five poets in American history to be commissioned by a President Elect to write and deliver a poem for their Presidential Inauguration. Like Blanco’s “One Today,” which he composed for and read at President Obama’s second inauguration in 2013, these poems have uplifted millions of viewers of these historic events, conveying the country’s challenges, strengths, and hope for its future.

We invite teachers to use this lesson plan sequence and assignment to ask students to try their hand at writing their own Inaugural poems as part of the Inaugural Poem Project, and to submit them to the 2021 Inaugural Poem Contest

The winning poems will be featured on Poets.org and in American Poets magazine. The first place-winning student will receive $1000. The second place-winning student will receive $600; third place will receive $300. Submissions will be accepted online between November 30 and December 30, 2020. Please stay tuned and follow this page to access the entry form.

In the fall of 2020, the Academy of American Poets, the originator and organizer of National Poetry Month, invited students in grades 9 through 12 to enter artwork to be considered for the official April 2021 National Poetry Month poster.

The 2021 poster, which will help commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of National Poetry Month, will be sent to 100,000 libraries, schools, bookstores, and community centers nationwide and made available by download on Poets.org. It will feature the artwork of one winning student, to be selected by judges Maira Kalman and Renée Watson.

The Academy of American Poets is excited to share the eleven finalists in the 2021 National Poetry Month Poster Competition. Thanks again to everyone who submitted!

“The books and poet selected for this year’s NCTE awards speak to the pressing issues of our time. Tapping poetry and books to teach empathy, compassion, and understanding can indeed transform lives and our world...” NCTE Executive Director Emily Kirkpatrick
