How To Get Out Of Your Own Way | MacKenzie Scott Gives $4 Billion In Four Months | And More

As a feminist, Francophile and rule-flouter at heart, there’s a story that came out this week that was all but destined to be my favorite: Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has been fined by the French government for not hiring enough men.

Oui, you read that correctly: Paris must pay the French government €90,000 because, in 2018, Hidalgo hired 11 women and five men to serve in senior positions. This breached federal law at the time, which dictated that at least 40% of open roles should go to each gender. That rule has since softened, but it nonetheless underscores the danger of focusing solely on equality and ignoring equity. Fortunately, Hidalgo appears to understand the distinction.

“We must promote women with determination and vigor, because the delay everywhere in France is still very great," she said. "So yes, to promote and one day achieve parity, we must speed up the tempo and ensure that in the nominations there are more women than men."

MacKenzie Scott, who is the third richest woman in the world and also one of the most powerful, announced Tuesday that she has donated more than $4 billion to nearly 400 organizations—including more than a dozen historically Black colleges and universities, community colleges, food banks and more—in the last four months. “This pandemic has been a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling,” she wrote in a post announcing the giving. “Meanwhile, it has substantially increased the wealth of billionaires.”
