For(bes) The Culture's Top Stories From 2020

“Nah, we did that, Black-owned things / Hundred percent, Black-owned champagne / And we merrily merrily eatin' off these streams” - Jay-Z, “Family Feud”

In closing out the year, we took a look back at some of our most-read stories of 2020. We’ve compiled them below, and as you’ll see, most are about supporting Black-owned businesses, a movement we hope continues to gain momentum in 2021. Entrepreneurs of color have had a tough year: During Covid-19 shutdowns, Asian, Latinx and Black business owners fell by 26%, 32% and 41%, respectively. We spoke to some of these entrepreneurs to learn about how they pivoted and thrived.

From workplace DEI initiatives to corporate diversity pledges, efforts to support Black and Brown corporate professionals have also ramped up this year. But For(bes) The Culture wants to ensure this isn’t just a passing trend. In an effort to help inform how workplaces can create more inclusive and equitable environments in 2021 and beyond, we’re calling on Black and Brown professionals across all industries to participate in our anonymous survey on the state of corporate America. Take it here.

All that said, here’s hoping you’re able to take a break this holiday season to refresh, restore and spend time with loved ones, even if virtually. Remember, we can’t succeed if we’re not rested enough to continue breaking the systemic barriers that linger. Back to work soon. Until then, wishing you a very happy new year!

P.S.:
Check out our 2021 trend projections for Black and Brown communities.
