Happy New Year. I usually spend the first few days of January mistakenly writing the prior year on checks, but not this time. It feels good to turn the page on 2020. That said, the virus hasn’t loosened its grip on the country, and we’re hardly out of the woods from a public health or an economic perspective. Today’s featured story explores the financial toll the virus has taken on several Americans. One of them, a 58-year-old marketing manager, got some good news at the end of the year: after being laid off in September and applying to about 100 jobs, she finally landed a new position. This week in our Retire with Money Facebook group, a 35-year-old member posted this question to the group: “I have just talked with my financial advisor from [large brokerage firm] and I’m less than thrilled with him. I’m very heavy in dividend stocks and very light in growth...My 2020 return was negative.” The S&P 500 stock index gained around 16% in 2020, so that last sentence was painful to read. Members’ consensus was clear: fire your advisor. You can do better either on your own, or with a fiduciary advisor who must put your interests first.
