Here’s What House Democrats Plan To Do About Impeaching Trump This Week

TOPLINE

House lawmakers unveiled their articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump Monday and are expected to vote Wednesday or Thursday on impeaching him for inciting last week’s seizure of the U.S. Capitol Building, House Rules Committee chairman Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) told CNN Monday, after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told colleagues Sunday night the chamber would move forward with impeachment this week if a push to remove Trump via the 25th Amendment fails.

KEY FACTS

Pelosi said in a letter Sunday that House Democrats would introduce Monday a resolution from Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) calling for Vice President Mike Pence to activate the 25th Amendment and remove Trump, which they will try to pass via unanimous consent.

If the resolution doesn’t pass Monday, Pelosi said the House will vote on the resolution Tuesday and give Pence 24 hours to respond, and will then “proceed with bringing impeachment legislation to the Floor.”

Articles of impeachment will be formally introduced Monday by Raskin and Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), with one article of impeachment that charges Trump with “incitement of insurrection.”

McGovern told CNN Democrats will likely bring the articles of impeachment to the House floor Wednesday, “and I expect that [Trump] will be impeached” Wednesday or Thursday.

There will be a debate on the House floor over impeachment, though the exact details are still being worked out, McGovern said.
