Every so often, I get an email with a warning that there’s an issue with my PayPal account and a link to click on to resolve it. There’s only one problem: I don’t have a PayPal account. It’s no doubt a phishing scam. In 2019, people lost over $57 million to phishing schemes, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported. In one common iteration, scammers pose as a vendor you’re familiar with and demand payment. Other examples involve criminals posing as potential romantic partners and then requesting money from their marks. Learn some red flags to watch out for in today’s edition.

Last Friday, I wrote that some Americans were anxious about their children and grandchildren’s futures. A retired professor wrote in with some practical thoughts on how to launch the next generation — specifically, how to reduce the debt burden that weighs on so many.

“Regarding undergraduate study, strongly consider community college as a stepping stone to a bachelor's degree. Especially check out which community colleges have programs linked to four year colleges so that you do not take courses that are not transferable. Be careful in choosing a major, since things are changing so fast with technology. The two broad fields which today seem worth pursuing are technology and medicine (not only MDs and dentists but technicians, hygienists, EMTs, etc.). Think long and deep before pursuing graduate study unless you have a scholarship or an employer subsidy. The cost benefit equation of graduate studies seems to have shifted from the benefit side to the cost side.”
