Big Companies Try To Distance Themselves From Trump—While Still Paying Him Millions In Rent

It has been a tough stretch for the Trump Organization. Since the president’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, there’s been news of banks, brokers and city officials cutting ties with Trump’s business. Thankfully for Trump, his commercial real estate portfolio—the core of his fortune—has remained relatively intact. If big tenants start to flee, though, the Trump Organization will be facing serious problems, just as the president is preparing to return to it.

Several corporations that are reconsidering whether to fund Trump’s acolytes are in the awkward position of simultaneously serving as the president’s tenants.

Mind On Their Money

Donald Trump became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice, as a growing number of America’s wealthiest business leaders, including Ken Langone, condemned the President for his part in the Capitol riots. Langone, one of Home Depot’s three billionaire cofounders (who has donated more than $2.4 million to Republican organizations since 2019), said he feels ‘betrayed’ by Trump’s actions.

Other top CEOs to denounce President Trump include Apple CEO Tim Cook, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, and Bank Of America CEO Brian Moynihan.
Here is what they’re saying.

Meanwhile, another of the President’s tenants, the nonprofit organization named TB Alliance,
wants out of its space at 40 Wall Street, the President’s skyscraper in downtown Manhattan.

Sheldon Adelson
, the casino magnate and GOP mega donor, died Monday night from complications related to the treatment of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In 2012, Adelson became the largest individual donor in American in electoral history after putting over $90 million into the race against then-President Barack Obama. This number has since been surpassed.
