Who You Need In Your Success Circle | Bumble Plans An IPO | Inside Nemonte Nenquimo’s Fight To Protect The Amazon | And More

Throughout his time on the campaign trail, now-President Joe Biden would quote the Irish poet Seamus Heaney: “History says, ‘Don’t hope on this side of the grave,’ but then, once in a lifetime, the longed for tidal wave of justice can rise up, and hope and history rhyme.”

I daresay that yesterday, hope and history rhymed. The first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, administered the oath of office to Kamala Harris, our nation's
first female, Black and South Asian American vice president. (Women throughout the country celebrated by wearing pearls and Chucks, while Harris marked the occasion by wearing an outfit by Black designer and Under 30 alum Christopher John Rogers.)

Also making history was 22-year-old poet-laureate Amanda Gorman, who became the youngest poet ever to perform at a presidential inauguration. Her performance of her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” is getting well-deserved and widespread praise. The last three lines of the piece seem to be getting the most attention (“For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it, If only we’re brave enough to be it”), but I keep returning to this verse from the middle:

So while once we asked,
how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?

Cheers to bravery, and to history,
Maggie

P.S. If you want to see more of Gorman’s work, she opened the 2019 Forbes Women’s Summit with a powerful performance that contained these words of wisdom: “We will keep fulfilling this path until the world goes still to say, ‘where there’s will, there’s a woman. And where there’s a woman, there is always a way.’

Amazonian indigenous activist Nemonte Nenquimo is living proof that a modern-day “David and Goliath'' story is possible. When the Ecuadorian government announced it was going to auction off indigenous land to the highest bidder in the oil industry, Nemonte unified and led her people, the Waorani Nation, to victory in a landmark ruling, protecting 500,000 acres of rainforest from oil exploration and drilling.

ICYMI: Stories From The Week

MLK Day was Monday (and Black History Month begins in less than two weeks), and so to understand and appreciate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it’s important to understand and reflect on the legacy of his mother, Mrs. Alberta Williams King, an academic and a social activist in her own right.

Bumble filed a prospectus for an initial public offering on Friday morning in which it revealed financial information including: it recorded $417 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2020 (with a net loss of $117 million) and it had 12.3 million monthly active users as of September 2020.

AMC Networks announced on Friday the appointment of Christina Spade as CFO and executive vice president, effective immediately. Spade’s appointment is part of the recent trend of more companies tapping women to helm the CFO role.

The New York Mets fired their new general manager, Jared Porter, Tuesday, after ESPN reported that Porter had sent more than 60 unsolicited text messages and photos, including one of an erect penis, to a female baseball reporter in 2016.

Speaking of unacceptable behavior: Victim blaming is nothing new when it comes to
sexual harassment, but a new study from the University of Washington shows that some women are seen as more credible than others when it comes to sexual harassment claims: those who are “conventionally” attractive.

The Org, a business platform for creating free, public organizational charts, announced on Tuesday the launch of its new Jobs platform. It allows companies to list open roles within their public org charts (also for free), giving job seekers the opportunity to see who their future teammates and supervisors might be and how they’d fit into the company.

Check List

#1: Ignore the sunk cost fallacy. If your business needs troubleshooting, ask yourself, “If I had to start again, would I be doing what I’m doing today?” If the answer is “no,” forget about the time you’ve spent on your current path and instead make the changes you know you need.

#2: Build your “success circle.” According to experts, there are nine types of people you need to have in your network, including: a champion, a super-connector, and an accountability partner.

#3: Get rid of the guilt. If you’re inclined to beat yourself up for the hours you don’t spend working in a day, listen to Ladies Get Paid founder Claire Wasserman: “checking out for a bit is actually contributing to the sustainability of your work."
