With former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial looming, many Republicans in Congress are under serious pressure to support him – but too often, this has come in the form of death threats.

These are not the actions of isolated discontents. Rather, as University of Dayton human rights scholar Shelley Inglis explains, they represent a systemic campaign of violence and intimidation that seeks to reinforce and even recreate the authoritarian tone that characterized Trump’s presidency.
