What's going wrong at Liverpool, and what next for the Reds?

Paul Gorst Special

Sifting through the wreckage of Liverpool's Premier League title hopes has not been especially fun this week.

After a chastening, if somewhat harsh, 4-1 defeat to a Manchester City team who normally wilt in front of the paying support at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp and his players have had to take their medicine.
It leaves them 10 behind City, who have the added security of a game-in-hand over the Reds.

After such a dominant year last time out, Jurgen Klopp will have to reluctantly accept that new objectives will need to be met instead at Anfield.

The criticism has raged from all angles for the wonderful team that Klopp has constructed over the last three years.

Some of the critiques have been fair and even-handed, while others have been hugely overblown.

Football is a game of opinions, as the old saying goes.

My own is that this injury-hit, confidence-shot Liverpool team will one day return to the glories of last summer when it seemed like the good times were here to stay.

For now though, a battle for the top four is the extent of Klopp's ambitions.

But if they can secure that, then at least a fresh start can ensue next season when we will hopefully see a world allowing fans back into stadiums across the country.

That begins away on Saturday lunchtime when the champions are entertained by Brendan Rodgers' Leicester.

Liverpool FC must-read stories

A lot has changed since their last visit when a 4-0 win on Boxing Day 2019 provided Klopp with one of the genuine high points of an incredible title-winning campaign, but plenty is still up for grabs at the King Power Stadium.

While retaining their Premier League crown is now realistically beyond Liverpool, more success at Leicester, and beyond, could be just as significant for Klopp and his team as they adjust to their new reality.

Guiding the Reds back into the Champions League for another season, with all the financial clout that brings, is just as crucial in its own way as their recent trophy successes, even if it comes without all the glamour and hoopla.
