Issue 219 — February 14, 2021

Fury Bowser by Conker

Hey, issue #219 of Switch Weekly here, with your update on all things Nintendo.

Well, I didn't plan on picking up Super Mario 3D World, but after reading a few reviews I figured I'd give this Wii U port another shot. I didn't really give this game a fair chance first time around, chiefly because it wasn't the 3D Mario I wanted to see at the time (in that it didn't fit the mould of 64, Galaxy, etc). However, despite my misgivings on its linear nature, one thing I can say is that the constraints of set, closed levels is also this games biggest win — there is just so much platforming variety, and innovation here. You're served up Idea after idea with each new level. Whereas other games would hang on to an idea and milk it, this game just keeps chucking new ones at you. So yeah, this is me righting a seven-year wrong and giving 3D World its dues. 😅 This games alright. Bowser's Fury seems like a wild bit of experimentation in its own right too. No regrets picking this one up.

Last week, I ran a little competition to win a copy of Glyph. Thanks to all those who entered, and congratulations to reader Miguel. I'll have another giveaway for subscribers next week. 👀

Shoutout to Conker over on Twitter for letting me share the above awesome Bowser's Fury GIF with you! Please do go and drop a like on their tweet.

Next week sees just over 20 games hitting the eShop, and the full list is in the issue below as ever.

That's all from me (oh, happy Valentine's Day 😉), have a great week, and catch you again next Sunday.

Cheers,
Chris ✌️

REVIEW Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury: Inventive, expanded and unmissable — 3D World remains "an utterly essential Mario game that will blow your socks off. But on Switch, that’s only part of the story" as new addition Bowser's Fury adds "hours of additional challenges". Chris Carter at Destructoid enjoyed the 'breezy' gameplay of the new Fury add-on, but explains that he would "still wholly recommend this version of 3D World even without Bowser’s Fury". Cam Shea, writing for IGN, wasn't so convinced by this package, saying this isn't an essential buy, and may not be "the moustachioed must-play" you were hoping for.

Andy Robinson // VGC

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury — Digital Foundry Tech Review — The usual excellent tech analysis from DF, comparing this new port to the Wii U original.

Digital Foundry // YouTube

REVIEW Persona 5 Strikers — This hack and slash meets RPG (out later this month) 's "does the seemingly impossible in mashing up two very different genres and striking a balance that works". Overall it's described as "a fantastic game, from top to bottom" that "almost makes up for the absence of Persona 5 on the Switch".

Oliver Brandt // Vooks

REVIEW Little Nightmares II — Seeing a lot of high-praise for this creepy platformer. The author describes it as an 'astonishing' experience, adding it's the "most original platformer" they've played in years.

Sean Martin // Pocket Tactics

Four more titles will be added to the Switch Online collection this month — Three SNES titles and one NES title are being added on the 17th. All pretty obscure, which some folks aren't happy about — I'm ok with it, but do think that any new additions should be a mix of forgotten titles and more mainstream releases.

Nintendo of America // Twitter

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time - Announcement trailer — The latest Crash game is coming over to the Switch next month.

Nintendo // YouTube

REVIEW UnderMine— Described as a satisfying and "worthy addition to the Switch’s stable of rogue-ish titles".

Jordan Rudek // Nintendo World Report

REVIEW Heaven’s Vault — An "admirably bold" quasi-sci-fi adventure about archaeology.

Jay Rooney // Level Up Media

REVIEW Half Past Fate: Romantic Distancing

Ollie Reynolds // Nintendo Life

Doom Eternal Switch: The making of an 'impossible' port — Yup, Eternal on Switch is something of a technological miracle. This hour-long interview (with folks from both Panic Button and id Software) dives into how such 'impossible ports' are made a reality.

Digital Foundry // YouTube

PREVIEW Bravely Default II

Chelsea Beardsmore // Switch Player

Brain Age: This Switch game isn't available in the US, and that's so sad — The fact this came out over a year ago now and still hasn't seen a release Stateside is a bit weird to me. The DS version was a global megahit.

Abram Buehner // CBR
