5-Bullet Friday

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of “5-Bullet Friday,” a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. For those who donated to Amazon Conservation Team after my last blog post (“An Urgent Plea to Users of Psychedelics: Let’s Consider a More Ethical Menu of Plants and Compounds” [NOW UPDATED AND EXPANDED]), we are tallying the numbers and will have more updates soon!

Treat I’m enjoying —
Menakao’s Dark Chocolate 63% with Orange & Cranberries. I found this via Cocoa Runners, a beautiful and delicious service introduced to me by Reid Hoffman (@reidhoffman). Thank you, Reid!

What I’m watching (short) —
Penn and Teller: Fool Us | Mahdi Gilbert Performs Sleight of Hand without Hands. I discovered Mahdi through this video, which he shared in a comment on the blog and wrote that “everyone needs hope during this long and dark winter.” For more magic, check out my interviews with Penn Jillette and Richard Turner.

What I’m rereading —
The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr. I’ve long been fascinated by Mary Karr (@marykarrlit), and I originally picked up her book on the craft of memoir writing after a recommendation by Michael Pollan. It applies to much of life, and I’d consider it a philosophical guide in many respects, replete with the dead serious (e.g., how to communicate past abuse) and spit-up-your-coffee funny (e.g., catshit sandwich metaphors). If you work with the written word in any capacity, I highly recommend. For more Mary, check out my recent podcast interview with her.

What I’m listening to —
Malemolência (YouTube, Spotify) by Céu (@ceumusic). This has been one of my favorite songs for 4–5 years, and the entire album is stellar (Lenda is another standout for me).

Quote I’m pondering —
“Autobiography is only to be trusted when it reveals something disgraceful. A man who gives a good account of himself is probably lying, since any life when viewed from the inside is simply a series of defeats.”
George Orwell

And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — Maui Nui Venison. I’ve been eating Maui Nui Venison for the past year, and there’s no going back. My pantry and freezers are full of it, and I restock every month. Why? (1) If I combine Maui Nui Venison with even a little exercise, I drop bodyfat unbelievably quickly. (2) It tastes delicious and isn’t gamey. (3) Ethically, I feel great about Maui Nui protein, as axis deer are an invasive species on Maui, where their population needs to be managed in order to protect vulnerable ecosystems. The damage from overpopulation looks like wildfire damage and even disrupts coral systems with runoff.

Harvested using stress-free methods, Maui Nui’s fresh venison is clean tasting, tender, and one of the most nutrient-dense meats on the planet. Maui Nui is a nearly daily go-to for me, both as a supplement to my daily diet (broth, jerky snacks, etc.) and through main courses (via their fresh meat subscription programs). I fell in love with this company so much that I ended up investing, which is a rarity.

For all of these reasons, I’m excited to offer “5-Bullet Friday” subscribers 20% off their entire site until 03/08/21. This is a large discount. Visit MauiNuiVenison.com/Tim to see some of my favorite items, and be sure to use code TIM at checkout.

As a good friend and past podcast guest texted me recently (and I had no idea he’d even tried it): “This Maui venison is so good… Holy sh*t! I had no idea. Thanks for the heads-up. I smoked some medallions and then made them into something like a brisket scramble. It was beyond. It tastes better knowing that it’s also sustainable. Dunno if/why I will go back to beef unless it’s super special.”

For those who like ribs, here are some pics of my last rib meal.

P.P.S. Episode #500 was released this week! Kevin Rose (@KevinRose)—technologist, serial entrepreneur, world-class investor, self-experimenter, and all-around wild and crazy guy—was the first guest on the podcast nearly seven years ago. We were in San Francisco, sitting at this huge wooden table, and I remember being very nervous. I didn’t know what to expect, but if people liked the idea, I promised to do at least six total episodes. 600M+ downloads and hundreds of guests later, Kevin is taking the reins and interviewing me for episode #500! Hard to believe it all started off as a lark. It’s arguably the biggest thing I’ve ever done, and without you all—my dear listeners—it wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for allowing me to do this work. I love it. And for pure shits and giggles, we made a billboard in the middle of Ohio celebrating the 500th episode. Life is too serious to always take seriously, after all… 🙏
