8 Products For Better Sleep

Even in normal times, approximately 30 to 35 percent of the population experiences acute, or short-term, insomnia, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Add on the stress of coronavirus, social distancing, home schooling and job loss and you have a recipe for sleep problems, says Dr. Raj Dasgupta, assistant professor of clinical medicine at Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Daniel Deetz, a sleep specialist at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin, emphasizes the importance of forming a daily routine where you get up and go to sleep at the same time. Regular exercise, even if performed in the evenings, can reduce night-to-night fluctuations in sleep he says. “At least one hour before bed should be quiet time where you decrease any stimuli,” says Dr. Deetz. “This means no computer, no iPhone, limited TV. You want to avoid stimulants such as caffeine that are found in alcohol, chocolate, soda and coffee and some teas.”

Making the bedroom a sanctuary of comfort and calm can also encourage zzz’s, Deetz says. Below, experts advise on the essentials that will help you drift off with ease and sleep soundly through the night.

Sleep Mask: Manta Sleep Mask

Sleep Mask: Manta Sleep Mask

Studies have shown that people who wore a sleep mask experienced less sleep disruption and more REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which stimulates the areas of the brain essential for learning and making and retaining memories. Customizable eye cups on the Manta Sleep Mask ($29.99) don’t put pressure on your eyes, allowing them to move naturally during REM sleep. And unlike many sleep masks that let light seep in around the nose and sides, the Manta is like a portable blackout curtain, providing total darkness.

Earplugs: Mack's Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs

Quality of sleep is just as important as quantity of sleep, says Dr. Dasgupta. Research has shown that even low-level noises may impact health due to sleep disturbance. Earplugs can help block everything from sirens to snoring. An affordable classic, Mack’s Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs ($9.89 for a 50-pack) have a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 32 decibels out of a possible 33.

Comfortable Pillows: Parachute Down Alternative Pillow

After tracking the sleep patterns of 55 high school students for two weeks researchers at the Galván Laboratory for Developmental Neuroscience at UCLA and discovered darker rooms and zero technology weren’t the main contributors to a solid night’s rest. Participants who reported the greater satisfaction in their bedding and pillows had better sleep quality. Test out what works best for you as everyone has different preferences, says Dr. Kubas.

Aromatherapy: Lavender Sachets (Set of 4)

Holistic practitioners have long touted the anxiety-reducing effects of lavender oil. A study at Wesleyan University in Connecticut backs up the theory, concluding that lavender can help promote deep sleep. Dr. Dasgupta cautions that some patients complain of essential oils staining their bed sheets. For a mess-free alternative, tuck a Dot and Army Lavender Sachet ($25 for a set of four) under your pillow. If you massage the pouch every few weeks the oils will permeate the linen and maintain its calm-inducing floral scent for up to two years.

White Noise Machine: Adaptive Sound Technologies LectroFan High Fidelity White Noise Sound Machine

Urbanites who fled to the suburbs or countryside in the wake of the coronavirus may find the quieter environs more difficult for sleeping, says Dr. Dasgupta. “Some people find the total absence of noise unnerving,” he says. A white noise machine can provide the background buzz some people need to be lulled to sleep, he says. The LectroFan White Noise Machine ($44.62) has ten fan sound settings and ten ambient noise variations, including white noise (blowing wind), pink noise (ocean waves) and brown noise (a rumbling waterfall).

A Cooling Mattress Topper: chiliPAD Sleep System

Studies show that a bedroom temperature of around 65 degrees Fahrenheit is most conducive to restful sleep but if you share a bed, your partner may disagree, says Dr. Kubas. The chiliPAD Sleep System ($499) offers a WE option for standard queen, king and California king-size mattresses that provides individual thermal regulation on both sides of the bed.

Old-School Alarm Clock: Newgate The Fred Minimalist Alarm Clock

Having your iPhone as a bedmate is bad sleep hygiene, says Dr. Deetz. You don’t want any glow, whether from your phone or a digital clock, close to your bed, he says. If you depend on an alarm to rise on time, invest in an analog device like Newgate The Fred Minimalist Alarm Clock ($39). At night, Dr. Kubas suggests turning the face around to avoid clock watching, which often causes more anxiety when someone cannot fall asleep.

Studies have shown that by simulating a sunset and then simulating a sunrise in a darkened room, you can trick your body into a balanced circadian rhythm. The Philips Smart Sleep Sleep and Wake Up Light ($179.95) lets users customize their sunrise and sunset options so you can wake to Nordic white hue or Caribbean red glow. Settings are controlled via the SleepMapper app, which also tracks your sleep stages and awards users a nightly sleep score.
