Why We Still Owe This Historic Black Female Trailblazer A Great Deal Of Debt

“Everybody that’s survived got survivor’s guilt” - Drake, “Lemon Pepper Freestyle”

“Buy Black. Every time you set foot in a white man’s store, you are making the lion of prejudice stronger and stronger.”

Maggie L. Walker
spoke those words in 1906, but they remain just as relevant in 2021. Walker is the subject of the second profile in our CultureX: The Forgotten series. The first Black female founder of a bank in America, she taught a generation of women how to achieve financial independence and was the largest employer of Black women in the city of Richmond. This trailblazer is owed a great deal of debt for her efforts, and if you haven’t read up on her, now is the time.

Follow along as we continue to spotlight historic Black titans with CultureX: The Forgotten, and stay tuned for more from our ongoing
State of Black Entrepreneurship project.
