The URL Renaissance: Linktree Raises $45 Million To Fuel 'Link In Bio' Social Commerce

Happy Friday from the CMO Network,

With social platforms and commerce becoming increasingly fragmented, one Australian startup is betting on one link to rule them all, one link to find them—And on the internet, bind them. On Thursday, Linktree announced it has raised $45 million to fuel the “link in bio” renaissance. We spoke with the company's cofounders and with investors Index Ventures and Coatue about the Series B round, which comes just a few months after Linktree’s $10.7 million Series A. Read the full story here.

This past week we also had coverage of nonprofit Charity: Water’s Twitch crowdfunding efforts, Parachute founder Ariel Kaye’s post-pandemic ambitions, Arizona nonprofits’ pandemic-related revenue losses and Stuffed Puffs’ disruption of the $40 billion candy industry. And speaking of sweets, Peeps and Pepsi have partnered on a new limited edition marshmallow-flavored beverage, one that, I was disappointed to learn, they didn’t name the drink—wait for it—Peepsi. (I’ll be here all week.)

If you have news tips or story ideas, feel free to email me. Otherwise, have a good weekend.

Terminix CMO Alex Ho Talks About Humor In Marketing

This week, pest control company Terminix launched a new campaign around the extremes people go to ridding their homes of roaches and termites. But the Memphis-based business didn't use fearit used humor.

According to Chief Marketing Officer Alex Ho, who joined Terminix last year after several years as the CMO of American Greetings, one of the most effective ways to promote a solution to a problem is to highlight the problem. The comedic route is a stark, but effective, difference from how the company once marketed exterminator services with CGI pest monsters.

“It was our feeling that in the past year with so many things that people can be afraid of and stressed about, pushing up against fear just wasn’t a good thing for mental health,” Ho says. “So we decided to turn it on its head and to say well, you can talk about a scary subject if you say it with a smile.”

The spots—available for viewing on the brand’s YouTube channel—also highlight the trend of marketers returning to comedy after a year spent largely avoiding the genre due to the pandemic. (Early signs of this could be seen in many of the ads aired during Super Bowl LV.)

“What I found out in all these years of marketing is that unless you’re speaking to consumers in the most relevant way, they’re likely to tune you out. And tuning out of course means a waste of money," says Ho. "Our goal was to connect with consumers in a way that’s most relevant to them.”

"When I was trying to pitch this campaign internally, I kept quoting Mary Poppins: 'A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.' The reason that’s such an old saying is because generally speaking, it is true—if you basically say it with a smile or approach something difficult with a bit for a lens."
