Louder: She’s Marianne Faithfull, Damn It.

One of my high school English teachers gave us a weekly assignment that I (mostly) remember (sorry, Ms. Esslinger!). I vaguely recall it involved summarizing write-ups from The New York Times Book Review on slips of yellow paper. But I firmly recall the October 1994 week when I selected the review of “Faithfull: An Autobiography” by Marianne Faithfull with David Dalton. The headline was inviting (“Sex and Drugs and Mick and Keith”). The details were vivid. The quotes provided my friends with in-jokes that persist to this day.

Faithfull had lived a full life, and almost died several times, by the time that book published. When Lindsay Zoladz recently spoke with her for a new profile, she had added a few more notches to both columns. She had been hospitalized with Covid-19 and fell into a coma, but fought her way back and finished a project that arrives next week, “She Walks in Beauty,” a spoken-word tribute to the Romantic poets. “You don’t want to get this, darling,” she said of the coronavirus. “Really.”

This week Jon Pareles did a deep exploration of “Plastic Ono Band,” John Lennon’s first solo release after the Beatles, which returns for its 50th anniversary in a massive boxed set. And Lindsay also wrote about “Sisters With Transistors,” a fascinating documentary about women synth pioneers.

And a gem from our classical colleagues: “Lois Kirschenbaum was a switchboard operator from Flatbush, Brooklyn, who became perhaps New York’s biggest and longest-standing opera buff — and an obsessive autograph collector.” Until her death at 88, she kept her memorabilia in her East Village apartment, and Corey Kilgannon took a tour.
