Has a hay bale ever left an impression on you?

This week
Yahoo Answers, that shining beacon of internet hive mind, has shut down for good. I asked my friend Lindsay Wood, a true connoisseur of the random-question platform, to curate a list of the best queries ever posed there. I apologize in advance that you cannot click through to see the actual answers. I figured that I could link to them on the internet archive, but I was wrong! So now you have to enjoy only the questions—a kind of psychedelic poetry from an earlier age of the social internet. Feel free to supply your own replies.
  • How can I get back at my mom without shoving pizza crust up my butt?
  • Would you purchase a wine made out of shredded wheat?
  • Has a hay bale ever left an impression on you?
  • Why does my sister's breath smell like sweetcorn?
  • Where can I find a movie review for Babe: Pig in the City?
  • In Scattergories, if "L" came up and the category was "type of sandwich" would you say "Lunchable" is correct?
  • Can you go into CVS with rollerblades on?
  • How can I use the words discombulating and plantain together in a sentence?
  • Where is the bride's purse when she's walking down the aisle?
  • Should there be a salad bar in every movie theater?
  • Help. I can only think of 5 layers of the 7 for 7-layered bean dip.?
  • Is Doogie Howser based on a true story?
  • How do you remove cigarette smoke from a Longaberger basket?
  • What's the best way to contact Tom Selleck and how?
  • Is evolution responsible for girls not farting?
  • When was the last time you shook your groove thing and enjoyed it?
  • Does anyone know if the Chipmunks will sing all of "Bad Romance"?
  • What should Dr. Phil do?
  • How can I stop looking so much like Dave Mustaine?
  • Have you ever had a pet that was the equivalent of Walker, Texas Ranger?
  • Cheeseburger in a can? Where can I order one?
  • Can women be topless in public if their hair covers their chest?
  • What does having a long pinkie nail mean?
Thank you, Lindsay. And thank you, Yahoo Answers for the years of entertainment.

I'm reading
How Yahoo became the bumbling villain of internet culture. How video games blur the line between work and leisure. Mary Big Bull-Lewis is taking a creative approach to returning ownership of the land and its stories to Native people. Human communities don't always destroy resources—they can conserve them, too. As landlords and tenants go broke across the U.S., the next crisis point of the pandemic approaches. A conversation with Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, the Princeton professor and socialist activist. There's a COVID outbreak on Mt. Everest. What happens when a perfumer loses their sense of smell? What if, against all odds, you want to birth a human baby and remain totally, unconditionally yourself? How to make your mom happier. Let's zone out to some Olive Garden disintegration loops.

Pie chart
I'm recovering from my second-dose vaccination, so I'm skipping the chart this week. Pie will be back next Friday, when I'm feeling 100 again. Become a paying member for just $15/year to underwrite this section and keep it coming.

I’m looking & listening
How mRNA vaccines work. And we've got Death, Sex, and Money host Anna Sale on CYG this week.

I endorse this simple PSA, directed toward anyone who has access.

I endorse
A few new (and new-ish) magazines:
  • Lux, a magazine for feminists "in pursuit of a new world, at the forefront of struggles for police abolition, healthcare, and control over our work, looking toward a horizon beyond which everyone has access to food and shelter, to beauty and pleasure."
  • Image, the LA Times' new fashion and lifestyle supplement. The inaugural issue lineup featured some of my very favorite writers, and I am excited to keep reading.
  • Dirt, which covers entertainment from the intersection of streaming, old media, and all things social. It's technically a newsletter but, with its rotating cast of contributors and its tight editorial point of view, it feels extremely magaziney to me.
  • Salty. Not brand-new, as I've linked to it pretty regularly for the past year or more. But I love the personal essays in this digital magazine, which bills itself as a "newsletter and community for unapologetic women, trans and non binary people."

Testimonials
"I signed up in April and told myself that if I read the newsletter regularly for 2 months I'd become a paying subscriber... but have enjoyed it so much I paid up my $15 after just a month. Thanks for making it!" -Kate. This is exactly how I handle the "to pay or not to pay" question as a subscriber: If I consistently read a newsletter for a few months, I pony up for the paid version

What is this newsletter?
If you can't quite explain but you do really enjoy it, forward it.
