Note from the editor

When the pandemic took hold in the U.S. last spring, consumers cleared shelves of certain essential goods — household disinfectant, hand sanitizer and toilet paper.

But another category of goods also saw a boost: home. As COVID-19 forced many to work and school from home, consumers began investing more in their personal spaces to make their "new normal" more comfortable.

The sector, largely considered nonessential, painted a very different picture from other discretionary categories, like apparel, which
suffered from sales declines over the past year.

Even prior to the pandemic, home retailers were on the rise as a result of higher homeownership and favorable generational demographics.

After the demand spikes the category experienced in 2020, we took a look into
how sustainable this growth is and what we can expect in the years ahead.
