I remember hearing “Nothing Compares 2 U” on the radio endlessly. I remember Sinead O’Connor tearing up a photo of the pope on “Saturday Night Live” (though I don’t remember anyone ever explaining to me why). I remember her being gleefully pilloried in pop culture.

What does Sinead O’Connor remember? A version of these events through a very different lens, which she hasn’t previously been welcome to share. But as Amanda Hess describes, in a beautiful profile, O’Connor sees the moment most of us view as the end of her career as a course correction. And she is still unafraid to speak her truth.

Also this week: The official arrival of a budding pop superpower, Olivia Rodrigo. A profile of the prolific, gifted Georgia Anne Muldrow. A must-read package in Arts & Leisure examining the culture we shared in the year after George Floyd’s murder. And a band of punk-rock teens (and one tween) that had the whole internet listening to its anti-hate anthem.
